Method 1: The Paper Strip Method (Most Reliable Without Tools)

This is the most accurate no-tool method for measuring a bare finger. Use paper rather than string string stretches slightly under tension and consistently produces measurements that run small.

Cut a strip of paper approximately 10 centimeters long and half a centimeter wide. Narrow width prevents bunching around the finger, which distorts the measurement.

Wrap the strip snugly around the base of the finger where the ring will sit. Snug means the paper touches skin all the way around without pinching. A good test: the paper should rotate around the finger with slight resistance, not slide freely.

Mark with a thin pen line where the paper overlaps. A thin mark matters a thick mark from a wide pen can add 1 to 2mm to the reading, which shifts the size by half a step.

Lay the strip flat against a ruler and measure from the end to the mark in millimeters. This number is your finger circumference. Method 2: Measuring an Existing Ring (Most Accurate Overall)

If you already own a ring that fits the target finger comfortably, measuring it directly is more accurate than measuring a bare finger because it bypasses all the variables of skin texture, swelling, and measurement tension.

Place the ring on a flat surface. Measure the inside diameter straight across the interior opening at the widest point, passing through the center. Do not measure the outside of the ring or include the metal width in the measurement. Use a ruler with millimeter markings for this, or a digital caliper for greater precision.

Convert the inside diameter using the chart above: 16.5mm is US size 6, 17.3mm is US size 7, 18.1mm is US size 8.

One important qualifier: the existing ring must fit the same finger on the same hand as the new ring. Ring sizes vary between fingers and between hands. The ring finger on your right hand is often a different size from the ring finger on your left hand. An index finger is typically larger than a ring finger on the same hand. Never use a ring sized for one finger to order a ring for a different finger.

Method 3: The Printable Ring Sizer

Many jewelry brands including Blue Nile and Linjer offer free printable ring sizer PDFs on their websites. These are two-page documents: one page with concentric circles showing inside diameters for each size, one page with a cut-out paper sizer strip.

For the circle page: print at exactly 100% scale, not "fit to page" which resizes the circles. Size for the knuckle in these cases: measure the knuckle circumference, size up to the next half size, and the ring will sit slightly loosely at the base but will not require force to put on or take off.

Wide bands. A wider band has more skin contact than a thin band and always feels tighter at the same nominal size. If you are moving from a 1mm stacking ring to a 4mm or wider band, go up half a size. The wider the band, the more this effect is pronounced. Between sizes. If your measurement falls between two sizes, always choose the larger size. A ring slightly too large can be adjusted more easily than a ring that is too small, and for everyday wear the slightly looser fit is more comfortable over a full day.

How to Size a Ring as a Surprise Gift

The proposal ring, the birthday surprise, the gift when asking is not an option. A few techniques that work reliably.

Borrow a ring the recipient wears on the intended finger. Measure its inside diameter using Method 2 above. Put it back before it is noticed. This is the most accurate approach.

Trace the inside of the borrowed ring onto a piece of paper with a pencil. Measure the traced circle's diameter. The trace method works if borrowing the ring briefly is possible but returning it immediately is necessary.

Ask a close mutual friend or family member. Partners, siblings, and best friends often know ring size or can find out subtly. This is more reliable than estimating from hand size, which varies enormously and is not a dependable guide to ring size.
