Our Return Policy Explained: Easy, Hassle-Free US Returns

Nobody loves reading return policies. They're usually buried in a footer link, written in dense legal language, and full of exceptions that only become relevant the one time you actually need to use them which is exactly the wrong time to be discovering surprises.
So instead of writing a typical return policy page and hoping nobody ever has to read it closely, we wanted to walk through it the way we'd explain it to a friend. What's covered, what isn't, how long you have, and what actually happens once you start a return. If you've read our last post about shipping to the US, this is the natural follow-up — because the experience of buying from us doesn't end when the package arrives. It ends when you're happy with what's in it, one way or another.
The Short Version
You have 30 days from the date your order is delivered to request a return or exchange. Items need to be unworn and in their original packaging. Once we receive a return, refunds are processed back to your original payment method. There's one category of items — pierced earrings — that have a hygiene-related exception, which we'll explain in detail below because we think it deserves more than a one-line disclaimer.
That's the policy in a nutshell. Everything below is just the detail behind each piece of it.
Why 30 Days, and Why It Starts at Delivery
A lot of return policies count the window from the date you placed the order, which quietly eats into your time if shipping takes a while — and as we covered in our last post, international shipping can take 7 to 15 business days for standard delivery. Counting the return window from your order date instead of your delivery date would mean a meaningful chunk of your 30 days disappears before the item even arrives.
So our 30-day window starts when the package is marked delivered, not when you placed the order. That means you get the full 30 days to actually live with the piece — try it on, see how it looks with different outfits, decide whether it's what you pictured — before needing to make a decision.
Thirty days is also, frankly, the range most reputable jewelry brands land in. Some go shorter, some go longer, but 30 days is enough time to genuinely evaluate a piece without being so long that it creates inventory and fraud headaches on our end. We think it's a fair middle ground.
What "Unworn and Original Packaging" Actually Means
This phrase shows up in basically every jewelry return policy, and it's worth being specific about what it means in practice, because vague language here is where most return disputes start.
Unworn means the piece hasn't been worn in a way that would create wear, scent, or alteration. Trying a ring on briefly to check the fit, then deciding it's not for you, is completely normal and fine. Wearing a necklace to an event and then deciding to return it afterward is a different situation — at that point, the piece has been worn, and that's generally not something we can accept back into inventory and resell as new.
We get that this can feel like a fine line, and in practice, most returns are genuinely straightforward — someone orders a piece, realizes it's not quite their style or the size isn't right, and sends it back essentially as it arrived. That's the normal case, and it's what this policy is built around.
Original packaging means the box, pouch, and any included materials the piece arrived in. We ask for this mainly because how a piece is packaged for return affects how well it survives the trip back — sterling silver jewelry traveling loose in a padded envelope is much more likely to arrive scratched or tangled than something returned in its original protective packaging.
The Earrings Exception — And Why We Think It's Fair
Here's the part of return policies that often gets glossed over, but we'd rather be direct about it.
For hygiene reasons, pierced earrings that have been worn are not eligible for return. This is standard across the jewelry industry — not a Zalkari-specific restriction — and it exists for a straightforward reason: earring posts make direct contact with pierced skin, and once that's happened, there's no way to verify or guarantee the hygiene of the item for a future customer.
What this means practically: if a pair of earrings doesn't fit your ear comfortably, or the style isn't what you expected once you tried them on, and they haven't been worn against pierced skin, they're returnable under the standard policy. If they've been worn, they're not — regardless of how briefly.
We know this can be frustrating, especially if you're ordering earrings as a gift and aren't sure about sizing or style preferences. Our suggestion: if you're at all unsure about a pair of earrings — sizing, the way a stud sits, hoop diameter — reach out to us before wearing them. We're glad to talk through sizing and fit questions, and getting that right before the first wear avoids the situation entirely.
This is also part of why care and cleaning content matters to us — if you do keep a pair of earrings, knowing how to care for sterling silver and keep posts clean (https://www.zalkari.us/blogs/news/how-to-clean-sterling-silver-jewelry) means fewer reasons to second-guess a purchase after the fact.
How to Actually Start a Return
The process is meant to be simple, and here's what it looks like step by step.
Reach out to us with your order number, either through our contact form or by email, and let us know which item you'd like to return and why. The "why" isn't to interrogate you — it genuinely helps us if a particular piece is consistently coming back for the same reason, because that tells us something about sizing, photos, or descriptions that we should fix.
We'll confirm the return is eligible — meaning it's within the 30-day window, the item is unworn, and (for earrings) hasn't been worn against pierced skin — and provide instructions for sending it back.
Once we receive the returned item and confirm its condition, we process the refund to your original payment method. Refund processing typically takes a few business days on our end, though your bank or card issuer may take a few additional days to reflect it on your statement — that part is outside our control, but it's usually fast.
What About Exchanges?
If the issue is sizing — a ring that's a half-size off, for example — an exchange is often simpler than a return-and-rebuy. Let us know in your initial message that you'd like an exchange rather than a refund, and we can typically arrange to send the correct size out once the original item is on its way back to us, rather than making you wait for the full return cycle to complete before a replacement ships.
What If Something Arrives Damaged or Wrong?
This is a different situation from a standard return, and we treat it differently.
If a piece arrives damaged — something happened in transit, a stone is loose, a clasp is broken — or if we simply sent the wrong item, that's on us, not a standard return. Contact us with your order number and a photo of the issue, and we'll sort out a replacement or refund without requiring you to cover return shipping for our mistake. This connects to what we talked about in our shipping post — if something goes wrong on the journey from our facility to your door, that shouldn't become your problem to solve.
A Note on International Returns
Because we ship from our facility in India, as we explained in our last post, return shipping for items going back to us also involves an international leg. We're conscious that this is a meaningfully bigger ask than a domestic return where you might drop a package at a local post office and have it back to a US warehouse in a couple of days.
We're continuing to look at ways to make this part of the process smoother — including potential domestic return points in the US for certain situations. For now, if you're initiating a return, reach out to us first rather than just shipping something back blind — we can make sure you have the right address and instructions, and in some cases there may be options we can offer depending on the specific situation.
The Bigger Picture
We'd rather have a return policy that's a little more generous than strictly necessary and rarely gets used, than a tight policy that technically protects us but makes people hesitant to order in the first place. Most people who buy from us keep what they ordered — that's true across the jewelry industry generally, where return rates tend to be lower than in fashion or electronics. But for the times when a piece isn't right, we want the process to feel like a normal, reasonable thing to do — not a fight.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long do I have to return an item to Zalkari? 30 days from the date your order is delivered, not from the date you placed the order.
Can I return earrings if I don't like how they look? If the earrings haven't been worn against pierced skin, yes — they're returnable under the standard policy. Once worn, pierced earrings fall under our hygiene exception and aren't eligible for return, which is standard across the jewelry industry.
What condition does an item need to be in for a return? Unworn, with original packaging and any included materials. This helps ensure the item is in resellable condition and survives return shipping well.
How do refunds work? Once we receive and confirm the condition of a returned item, the refund is processed to your original payment method. This typically takes a few business days on our end, with your bank potentially adding a bit more time to reflect it on your statement.
What if my item arrives damaged? Contact us with your order number and a photo of the issue. Damaged or incorrect items are handled as a replacement or refund without requiring you to cover return shipping costs.
Can I exchange instead of returning for a refund? Yes — let us know you'd like an exchange when you reach out, and we can typically coordinate sending the correct item without waiting for the full return cycle to complete.
